Driving Zero-Emission Operations: CASE Partners with RTI to Support the EPA’s Clean Ports Program

Clean seaport

The EPA’s Clean Ports Program focuses on two main initiatives: the Zero-Emission Technology Deployment Competition ($2.8B) and the Climate and Air Quality Planning Competition ($150M). These initiatives are designed to reduce the public health and environmental impacts on communities near ports by funding zero-emission port equipment, infrastructure, and comprehensive climate and air quality planning.

Partnering with RTI, CASE’s consultants evaluated the scientific and technical merit of proposed grants under the program, following the EPA’s rigorous standards to assess project proposals. Our reviews contributed to informed decision-making and selection of projects for funding with the greatest potential to reduce emissions at U.S. ports, enhancing air quality for nearby communities, and advancing climate and air quality strategies.

CASE’s role was pivotal in identifying the most promising projects. Our experts performed in-depth reviews, prioritizing applications that:

• Lay the groundwork for the port sector’s shift to zero-emissions operations.

• Reduce diesel pollution in near-port communities.

• Encourage community engagement and integrate emissions reduction planning as standard industry practices.

In the Climate and Air Quality Planning Competition, CASE further supported critical activities like emissions inventories, strategy analysis, and resiliency planning.

CASE’s contributions to the Clean Ports Program underscore our commitment to environmental sustainability and public health. By guiding funding towards high-impact projects, CASE is helping to ensure that U.S. ports lead the way in the transition to zero-emission operations. Our collaboration with RTI and the EPA is vital in supporting the most impactful initiatives.
