Facility Operations Specialist – NOAA Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center (DRC)

Position Overview:
CASE seeks a Facilities Operations Specialist to join our team supporting the NOAA Gulf of Mexico Disaster Response Center (DRC) in Mobile, AL. The DRC is an 18,200 sq. ft., weather-hardened facility designed to withstand Category 5 hurricane winds and plays a vital role in regional emergency operations, disaster preparedness, and training. As a key member of our team, you will ensure the facility’s operational readiness, supporting its critical mission and events throughout the year.

Location: Mobile, AL (onsite)

Employment Type: Full-time, 40 hours per week (with flexibility for additional hours during events or emergencies)

Salary: Competitive, based on experience

Key Responsibilities:

  • Preventive Maintenance & Repairs:

    • Perform routine maintenance on building structures, roof, doors, floors, and equipment.

    • Conduct minor electrical repairs, including replacing switches and wiring.

    • Handle basic plumbing tasks like faucet and sewer maintenance, and oversee the solar-powered water heating system.

    • Replace light bulbs, clean fixtures, and maintain overhead lights using hydraulic lifts.

  • Facility Operations & Emergency Preparedness:

    • Conduct daily inspections of facility systems, including HVAC, security alarms, and solar water heating.

    • Provide recommendations for repairs and improvements to maintain operational efficiency.

    • Respond to emergency maintenance needs within 2 hours of notification, 24/7.

  • Event & Contractor Coordination:

    • Act as the primary liaison for facility guests and contractors.

    • Manage the facility calendar for events and training sessions, ensuring adequate support and setup.

    • Coordinate repairs with service providers and the Facility Manager.

  • Inventory & Safety:

    • Maintain an inventory of maintenance supplies and Safety Data Sheets for on-site chemicals.

    • Make recommendations for replenishments and improvements to facility stock.

  • Special Projects:

    • Contribute to initiatives enhancing facility utility, visibility, and operational capacity to support disaster preparedness and partner programs.

Qualifications:

  • Experience with facilities in disaster response or emergency preparedness environments.

  • Solid knowledge of handyman skill sets, including basic carpentry, plumbing, and electrical systems.

  • Ability to understand and support facility resilience systems, such as solar-powered systems and generators.

  • Strong problem-solving and multitasking abilities, with a proactive approach to facility management.

  • Physical ability to lift and carry objects up to 50 pounds frequently, up to 100 pounds occasionally (with assistance).

  • Willingness to work outdoors in inclement weather and perform tasks at heights using ladders and lifts.

  • Availability to respond to emergency calls outside normal working hours.

  • Familiarity with hydraulic lift equipment and forklifts is a plus.
